The Lightning Network is a layer 2 technology built on top of the Bitcoin network.
Essentially it allows Bitcoin to be sent across the Lightning Network to any beneficiary, instantly and for almost free. Lightning makes it practical and efficient to send small amounts of bitcoin, making ordinary payments in bitcoin a reality.
The TPS (Transactions per second) of the Lightning Network is 1,000,000. Hence the name, lightning.
